Wat zijn duurzame sieraden? 5 punten om op te letten

What is sustainable jewelry? 5 things to look out for

Sustainability is no longer just a trend. It's a conscious choice. More and more women are opting for jewelry that is not only beautiful but also responsibly made. Yet "sustainable" has sometimes become a buzzword. And not every brand that uses it truly operates fairly and environmentally friendly.

In this blog, you'll read what sustainable jewelry truly is, how you can assess whether a piece of jewelry is sustainable, and which 5 points you can check before buying. This way, you can confidently wear a necklace, bracelet, or pair of earrings that not only enhance your outfit but also make the world a little more beautiful.

Kluttery's jewelry is made from leftover precious stones and pearls from former jewelers in Europe. No new mining, but luxurious materials, timeless design, and craftsmanship. Discover the collection and view sustainable jewelry

1. Origin of Materials

Sustainable jewelry begins with its raw materials. Are new gemstones being mined, or does the maker use leftover materials, recycled stones, or vintage pearls? The difference is enormous: new mining consumes a lot of energy, water, and often has a social impact.

At Kluttery Sieraden, we use existing materials: beautiful gemstones and pearls that were once purchased by jewelers but never processed. This way, luxury gets a second life.

2. Quality and Lifespan

Sustainability also means you can wear something for a long time. A necklace made of genuine .925 silver or 14K gold-filled will remain beautiful for years, while cheap metals quickly tarnish or even cause allergic reactions.

Invest in quality, then you won't have to buy something new every season. Better for the planet, better for your wallet, and frankly… more enjoyable for your jewelry collection.

3. Fair Production

The material may be beautiful, but how is the jewelry made? Sustainable also means: no mass production in factories with poor working conditions. Choose brands that are transparent about their process and produce locally or on a small scale.

At Kluttery, each piece of jewelry is handmade, in small batches, in the Netherlands.

4. Timeless Design

Trends come and go, but a timeless design remains wearable for years. A piece of jewelry you still love to wear in ten years prevents it from disappearing into a drawer. Think of subtle necklaces with a meaningful stone, or elegant earrings that suit both jeans and evening dresses.

5. Packaging and Shipping

Even the most beautiful sustainable necklace can gain extra value through environmentally friendly packaging and shipping. Think of recycled paper, reusable boxes, and CO₂-compensated delivery.

Our jewelry is delivered in luxurious gift packaging, designed to be kept. Because beautiful things are not thrown away. In addition, they are delivered in a letterbox package, so the parcel deliverer never has to drive twice.
