Birthstones are a little more than just beautiful gemstones. They tell a story. Your story. You can choose a bracelet, necklace or earrings with your own birthstone, or choose a stone that belongs to a loved one. Either way, it's a piece of jewelry that you wear with pride, because it's more than just an accessory.
In this article, you'll read what birthstones are, what they mean, and how you can wear them stylishly.

What are birthstones?
Each month of the year has a corresponding gemstone, traditionally seen as a symbol of luck, protection, or strength. This tradition goes back hundreds of years, with roots in both Western and Eastern cultures. The most well-known list of birthstones was established by the American Gem Society, but small variations exist in different countries. Thus, each month has several birthstones.
An example of a stone per month that you can regularly find at Kluttery:
- January: garnet symbolizes friendship and trust
- February: amethyst represents peace and balance
- March: aquamarine represents peace and clarity
- April: rock crystal represents purity and strength
- May: aventurine for growth and positivity
- June: moonstone symbolizes purity and intuition
- July: carnelian represents courage and creativity
- August: peridot represents renewal and positive energy
- September: lapis lazuli represents wisdom and inner peace
- October: rose quartz is the stone of love and harmony
- November: citrine is a sunny stone that stimulates happiness and creativity
- December: labradorite represents intuition and personal transformation
At Kluttery, we work with real, natural gemstones that we source from leftover batches, vintage jewelry, and old collections. This makes each piece unique and sustainable.
The meaning behind your birthstone
A birthstone is often chosen because it corresponds to your birth month, but many people also choose based on feeling: a stone that appeals to them through color, energy, or symbolism. The meaning can be personal: perhaps you wear amethyst because it reminds you of someone you miss, or you choose citrine because its sunny color gives you energy.
Throughout the centuries, gemstones have been seen as sources of power. Sometimes literally, sometimes purely symbolically. Perhaps you believe in their spiritual effect, or not at all. In any case, wearing a stone that tells a story for you makes a piece of jewelry special.
How to wear birthstones stylishly?
With birthstones, you can go in any direction stylistically. A few ideas:
- Minimalist & subtle. Choose a delicate necklace with a single gemstone as a small pop of color. Perfect for everyday wear.
- Mix of stones. Combine your birthstone with that of your partner, child, or best friend.
- Statement piece. A larger gemstone in a striking ring or necklace, for special occasions.
- Layers. Wear multiple necklaces of different lengths, each with a different stone or meaning.
At Kluttery, we use .925 silver, 14K gold filled, and vermeil, in combination with upcycled gemstones. These stones come from old stock from former jewelers. This means that each piece of jewelry has a sustainable character and is often only available in limited quantities.
Why give a birthstone as a gift?
A piece of jewelry with a birthstone is a gift that shows you've put in effort. It's personal, symbolic, and often timeless. Perfect for birthdays, births, anniversaries, or simply as a surprise.
Because we at Kluttery work with reused materials and leftover batches, each piece is not only unique but also a conscious choice for sustainability. Please note: not every birthstone is always in stock. Sometimes a certain stone is not available for months. And that makes it all the more special if you do find it. Looking for something specific?
