Gold filled sieraden: Duurzaam en luxe

Gold filled jewelry: Durable and luxurious

If you're looking for jewelry that retains its beauty for a long time, gold filled is a material you may have encountered. But what exactly does it mean, and why is it more durable than (for example) gold plated?

In this article, you'll discover why gold filled is a conscious and luxurious choice, how it differs from other gold finishes, and why it perfectly aligns with Kluttery's sustainable vision.

What exactly is gold filled?

The term gold filled sounds like “filled with gold,” but in reality, it means that the jewelry is constructed from a thick layer of real gold permanently bonded to a base metal core, usually brass.

The difference with gold plated is significant. There are no quality requirements for gold plated, which means there are gold plated pieces of very high quality, but also (very many) of poor quality.

With gold plated, the gold layer is often only a few microns thin, but with gold filled, this layer is at least 50 to 100 times thicker and is bonded to the base material under high pressure and heat.

The result? Gold filled jewelry remains beautiful for years, does not tarnish quickly, and can withstand daily wear.

Why gold filled is more sustainable

Gold filled jewelry is not only a luxurious choice but also a sustainable one. There are three main reasons for this:

1. Long lifespan

While gold plated jewelry can fade after a few months, gold filled lasts for decades with normal use. This means less replacement, less waste, and thus a lower ecological footprint.

2. No disposable mentality

In a world where many pieces of jewelry are produced to be worn for a short period, gold filled offers an alternative to fast fashion. It combines the look of solid gold with the accessibility of a conscious purchase.

3. Less raw material consumption

Because the outer layer of real 14K gold is so thick, the quality is maintained without needing a completely solid gold piece of jewelry. This saves raw materials and makes the jewelry more affordable.

At Kluttery, gold filled is only used in combination with upcycled gemstones, vintage pearls, and leftover materials. This creates a piece of jewelry that not only lasts a long time but also has an ethical origin.

Gold filled versus gold plated: the difference in practice

To make the difference tangible:

  • Gold plated jewelry can lose its shine within a few months, especially with contact with water or perfume.
  • Gold filled retains its color and shine for years, even with daily use. Despite this, a small note: still be careful with water and perfume, as these are never beneficial for jewelry.

Furthermore, the quality of gold filled jewelry is legally protected:

In the United States (where the process originated), a product can only be called gold filled if it contains at least 5% real gold of the total weight.

For gold plated, such rules do not exist. Although there are high-quality gold plated items, there are significant differences in quality. The layer can literally be as thin as a few dust particles.

This certainty makes gold filled so reliable for jewelry meant to be lived with, not replaced after one season.

Conscious craftsmanship at Kluttery

At Kluttery, I only work with materials that retain their value, both aesthetically and emotionally. The clasps, crimp beads, and spacer beads in my jewelry are 14K gold filled. The clasps themselves are 14K gold vermeil, which is .925 silver with a thick layer of 14K gold, as this type of gold filled clasp does not exist. Strict quality requirements also apply to 14K gold vermeil.

This way, I combine the best properties of both techniques:

✨ the luxurious appearance of solid gold,

🌿 the durability of long-lasting materials,

💛 and the possibility to assemble each piece of jewelry as desired, with a gold or silver finish.

This makes each piece not only beautiful to wear but also consciously chosen.

Sustainability in every detail

A gold filled piece of jewelry is an investment in something that lasts.

It combines luxury with responsibility, beauty with sustainability: exactly what Kluttery stands for.

Whether you choose a necklace, bracelet, or pair of earrings: you decide on the finish that suits you.

This way, each piece of jewelry becomes a small, personal statement of style and conscious living.
