How to Identify Real Gemstones: 5 Simple Tips

Gemstones have a special allure. Their colors, brilliance, and unique structures have made them beloved in jewelry for a very long time. But how do you really know if a gemstone is authentic? Especially now that many synthetic and imitation stones are on the market, it can be quite challenging.

In this article, you will find 5 simple tips to recognize real gemstones. Handy if you are buying jewelry yourself, or just curious about the world behind these special materials.

1. Look for unique imperfections

Real gemstones are natural products and therefore often have small imperfections. Think of mini-inclusions, color variations, or a natural growth structure. With glass or synthetic stones, you often see a too perfect, uniform result. Perfection is usually a sign of imitation.

2. Feel the weight

Gemstones are usually heavier than imitation stones made of glass or plastic. A simple test: hold the stone in your hand and feel if it feels relatively heavy for its size. Imitations are often surprisingly light.

3. Check the temperature

Gemstones feel cool to the touch when you pick them up, even in warm weather. Imitations (especially plastic) quickly adopt the ambient temperature and therefore often feel lukewarm or warm instead of cool.

4. Look at the luster

Each type of gemstone has its own luster: some are subtle and matte, others sparkling and bright. With glass or synthetic stones, you often see an unnatural, overly bright luster. Feel free to compare the stone with photos from reliable sources to check this.

5. Trust in origin and craftsmanship

Perhaps the most important tip: buy your gemstones from a reliable source. A jeweler who is open about the origin of the stones and chooses quality and sustainability gives you the certainty that you are dealing with real gemstones.

Why is this important?

Recognizing real gemstones is not just about value, but also about meaning. For many people, gemstones have a personal or spiritual significance. That's precisely why it's so valuable to know that you hold an authentic piece in your hands.

At Kluttery, I consciously choose leftover batches of real gemstones. These come from leftover stock of former jewelers with whom we have extensive contact, ensuring a relationship of trust before the stones arrive at Kluttery. In this way, existing materials are given a second life in new jewelry. This makes them not only sustainable but also extra unique.
